In the U.S., the idea of a car smaller than a Mini conjures mental images of a cramped interior, no trunk space, and a wheezing, gutless engine. In Germany the debut market advance orders are already being taken for the new up! with prices starting at 9,850 euros. The new Volkswagen will officially launch in successive steps beginning in late December 2011.

2013 Volkswagen Up Price :
Volkswagen has simplified the line up by offering just one model grade with one engine, one transmission and two bodystyles (three door or five door). The range starts at a mere $13,990.

Cruise control is absent from the standard spec sheet too, but is included in the optional $600 Comfort Drive package which bundles it with rear parking sensors and a trip computer. The $2500 Comfort Style package adds 15 inch alloys, foglamps, leatherette upholstery, heated front seats and a leather bound steering wheel and gearknob.

Pricing for the EV is still up in the air, but the gas and diesel versions will go for between 8000 and 9000 Euro ($10,000 to $11,000). Not surprisingly, the base Up! is not generously equipped, but it’s no Tata Nano either. Antilock brakes, stability control, and two airbags are said to be standard, though the bargain model lacks power steering, height adjustable seats, electric windows, central locking and even a spare tire. The new baby Volkswagen surprises with its high quality appearance, denoted by ultra thin cut lines, top notch materials and detailing good enough for a Passat. A low cost version of the VW Up!… may be built by Suzuki for distribution in certain low labor cost markets like China and India.

What first strikes you as you enter the Up’s cabin is the sense of quality. Plastics look durable, fit and finish is generally good and the instrument cluster is clear, legible and nice to look at. It blows away the Holden Barina Spark and Suzuki Alto for quality, and has a more cohesive design than the Nissan Micra. The flat bottomed steering wheel might only be urethane, but it’s a nice shape, comfortable to hold and a good diameter.

In establishing the car’s aerodynamics, special attention was given to attaining a minimal front overhang. With this goal in mind, the sides of the front section of the up! were shaped so that the air would flow around the wheel housings with minimal turbulence. In the pursuit of reducing every possible gram of CO2 emissions, the position and size of the front spoiler was also optimised progressively. Measurement series in the wind tunnel demonstrate that this refinement of the design has saved another 1.1 g/km CO2 that may seem like just a little, but the sum of all optimisation measures has yielded impressive values such as the 79 g/km CO2 that the up! EcoFuel BlueMotion Technology will attain. At the same time, the final front spoiler design reduces front and rear aerodynamic lift coefficients of the Volkswagen up!. This has resulted in even safer driving characteristics.

Interior space is quite good. The Up might be around half a metre shorter than the Polo, but its wheelbase is nearly the same and some clever engineering means that the Up’s interior feels just as spacious as the Polo’s if not more. It’s strictly a four seater, however back seat passengers get great amounts of headroom and surprising legroom. Getting into and out of the five door Up is also painless.

Bluetooth telephony and a USB port aren’t standard equipment either. Instead, Volkswagen has equipped all Up models with a laser based anti collision system, which can avoid rear enders at speeds up to 30km/h.

Viewed from the front, the up!… appears to smile, due to the lines of the bumper. And it is intentionally smiling. A narrow black band runs between the headlights (with integrated daytime running lights). Integrated here is the Volkswagen logo, which is the only chrome element at the front end. The up! can make do without large air cooling intakes due to its small petrol and natural gas engines and electric motor that will follow later. The headlights are significantly smaller than those of other Volkswagens, yet they are visually very prominent. Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design of the Volkswagen Brand comments: “The front end designs from the up! to the Phaeton all follow the same styling guidelines. The models are unified by such style elements as a strict emphasis of horizontal lines, joining of the grille and headlights and the conciseness of short angles. And yet, despite their clear brand affinities all Volkswagens are differentiated from one another. Crucial here are the differences in the proportions of the individual components. This leads to highly individual vehicles that span the model range from the congenial up!… to the sophisticated Phaeton.”

At 3.54 m in length and 1.64 m in width (without door mirrors), the up! is one of the smallest of four seat cars. The Volkswagen is 1.48 m tall. Its overall length consists of remarkably short body overhangs and a very long wheelbase (2.42 metres) a body layout that fully utilises the available enclosed space.

The increase in external dimensions is claimed to bring vastly improved crash protection. They also help in boosting overall accommodations; the ?length of the interior has increased by 14mm to 1750mm, providing the basis for a 15mm improvement in rear legroom. There are also 31mm and 30mm improvements in shoulder room for the front and rear seat occupants respectively. Elbow room is also up by 22mm and 20mm.

On a minimal footprint (3.54 metres long), the Volkswagen up! offers maximum space for 4 people and highly efficient powertrain technologies. Making its debut in the up!… is a new generation of three cylinder engines. The petrol engines have power outputs of 44 kW / 60 PS and 55 kW / 75 PS, fulfil the Euro 5 emissions standard and drive the front wheels. Combined fuel consumption values for the BlueMotion Technology version (with such features as a Stop/Start system, battery regeneration and tyres optimised for low rolling resistance): 4.2 l/100 km (60 PS) and 4.3 l/100 km (75 PS). Both 1.0 litre engines satisfy the 100 g/km CO2 emissions limit.

Other weight savings come through lighter engines; the new EA211 designated turbocharged 1.4 litre four cylinder is up to 22kg lighter than the earlier EA111, for example. The new Golf’s suspension, a combination of front MacPherson struts and a rear multi link arrangement, also includes more aluminium components for a significant 26kg reduction over that used by the sixth generation model.
