If the truck in the pictures looks familiar—yes, that’s the new one—it’s because the styling changes are quite minor. The front end gets squintier headlamps, a rearranged front bumper, LED fog lights, and a surprisingly modest new grille with a trio of louvers without any sort of gauche chrome surround. Other changes are limited to new wheels, a redesigned liftgate, and new tailpipes. That’s it.
The model pictured is the new Platinum grade, which gets 22-inch wheels, special badging, and a fancy leather-lined interior; XLT and Limited trims will continue, and a new King Ranch model will be added in the future. The Expedition also gets a new instrument cluster, steering wheel, and center stack that accommodate Ford’s latest Sync and MyFord Touch technologies. Other tech items of note include keyless access and remote starting, a blind-spot monitor, a rearview camera, ambient lighting, a 700-watt Sony sound system, and Ford’s “truck apps” to augment various towing and off-road driving tasks.  |

Significant changes under the hood may warrant waiting for the 2015 Expedition, though. A 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 -- also expected in the next-generation F-150 -- should help the Expedition achieve fuel efficiency to offset its body-on-frame mass. It should also give the big SUV impressive oomph. Rated at 420 pound-feet of torque, the new V6 should make the Ford the equal of any toy hauler in its class. By comparison, the Chevy and GMC SUVs use larger V8s to achieve 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The V6, however, may remain an option. We can't see the current Expedition's 5.4-liter V8 making the cut for the new generation, but Ford's 5.0-liter V8 -- the same engine that makes 420 hp in the Mustang GT -- could be the Expedition's base engine (although sufficiently detuned from the Mustang's output). Both engines will likely connect to a six-speed automatic transmission, at least until Ford introduces its oft-rumored 10-speed automatic, sending power to the rear wheels or through an available all-wheel-drive system. |

Prototype interior photos show the beginnings of an interior refresh, notably a center stack with revised climate and audio controls and a larger display that suggests the latest MyFord Touch navigation/multimedia interface. A new mechanical load-leveling rear suspension may also replace the current air suspension system.
We expect the 2015 Expedition to debut in late 2014, with sales to begin early the following year. New powertrain and technology also mean a new price, so expect the Expedition's current base price of $41,600 to climb closer to $45,000 -- about the same as the new Suburban's.
