Yet for the first time in years, the brand's dealerships have fresh sheetmetal: both in the form of the new Cadillac SRX-based 9-4X, and the all-new flagship sedan, a completely redesigned 9-5. The 9-5 has made it to market. And for what it is, it's a shame that Saab doesn't have more marketing resources or stronger dealerships with which to promote it. This is one of the best new efforts of the model year, with an excellent, spacious interior and a great mix of supreme isolation, driver involvement, and uniquely Saab character.<br /><br />Design-wise, the new 9-5 is a much more sophisticated sedan that, quite frankly, looks great from all angles. It eschews two common design traits of modern luxury sedans: all the creases and cutlines, and the high tail and high beltline, resulting in a fresh and different look, with smooth, glossy sheetmetal and a softened, somewhat rounded tail that hints to the hatchbacks and sedans of Saab's past. Inside, Saab heritage is reassured with details such as the swoopy instrument panel that cants most controls a bit toward the driver, as well as the expected ignition button located on the center console rather than the steering column or dash. With outdated green backlit displays that looked liked they were out of a 1970s passenger jet, there was little one could say about the niceties of the cabin. Step inside the new 9-5 and you’ll find it hard to believe it’s a Saab.<br /><br />Standard on all models is a giant eight-inch touchscreen embedded beautifully into the cabin. It has 10GB of space and comes equipped with satellite navigation. Connected to that is an 11-speaker Harman Kardon system that is sure to please even the fussiest of audiophiles. It has built-in Bluetooth phone connectivity but unfortunately misses out on Bluetooth audio streaming.<br /><br />The front windscreen has a minute wrap-around effect and the whole<b> </b>cabin is designed with a cockpit as inspiration. The digital speedometer can even be changed to show speed in the same manner as an altimeter, which is very enjoyable to use (although if you do end up with a speeding ticket, we suspect the men in blue will not buy it as an excuse).<br /><br />There is head-up display system which projects information (such as speed, temperature, time, navigation) on to the windscreen (standard across the range) while Aero and Vector petrol models are available with Saab’s DriveSense which allows the driver to pick from three different driving modes: Comfort, Intelligent and Sport.<br /><br />The front seats are very spacious but will still hug you when it matters. There is plenty of room to fit a Scandinavian warrior in the back seat, and if need be you can even entertain him thanks to the optional twin eight-inch rear screen systems (which can run independently of the front screen, so each of the three systems can play different media).<br /><br />During our review we got to drive the Turbo4 front-wheel drive and the Turbo6 all-wheel drive (referred to as XWD in Saab language) around the twisty mountain roads of Daylesford in Victoria (we will review the diesel soon). Despite being the same model, the Turbo4 and Turbo6 are totally different vehicles, not only because one is XWD and the other FWD, but also because their suspension set-up is unique. The diesel gets front McPherson type axle with a multi link rear axle for the most comfortable ride set-up possible. Unlike the Germans, the Saab has a very unique character to it. If there were only 100 BMW 5 Series vehicles on Australian roads, one could potentially say the same thing but given just how many are driving around, the Germans haven’t exactly got uniqueness on their side.<br /><br />The 9-5′s front, although modern, is still very much Saab. According to Saab’s head designer Simon Padian, the new 9-5′s look was inspired by light and nature, luxury of space, clean uncluttered design and contrast.<br /><br />The rear end sports the ‘iceblock’ style taillights that go across the entire back and create a very striking characteristic for the vehicle at night. Saab believes its customers strive for uniqueness, so offering a vehicle with character and Scandinavian design themes was a must.<br /><br />Overall you’re not going to mistake a 9-5 in traffic for a A6 or an E-Class. Its unique factor is probably its biggest drawing card against the mighty Germans.<br /><br />The interior of the old 9-5 wasn’t exactly what one would call technologically advanced. Front-wheel drive is standard, along with a six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed automatic is optional on the base Turbo4 and standard on all other 9-5 models. EPA-estimated fuel economy with this engine has not been announced as of this writing.<br /><br />The 9-5 Turbo6 XWD and Aero get a turbocharged 2.8-liter V6 that produces 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and Saab's advanced all-wheel-drive system are standard. In Edmunds performance testing, the 9-5 Aero went from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds ? a decent midpack time for all-wheel-drive sedans of this type. In Edmunds brake testing, the 9-5 Aero came to a stop from 60 mph in a short 113 feet. </span></span></span></span></span><br /><br /><span><span><span><span><span><b>Driving Impressions<br /></b>We have yet to drive the Turbo4 or Turbo6 models, but the 2011 Saab 9-5 Aero surprised us with its communicative steering and a very neutral balance through quick corners. Saab's all-wheel-drive system (which includes an electronic limited-slip differential) is one of the best, proportioning power seamlessly among the wheels for maximum traction and balance. We actually found the 9-5 Aero to be a more rewarding and involving driver's car than the new BMW 5 Series. We also found its adjustable drive settings (known as DriveSense) to be more adjustable and better sorted than BMW's similar system.<br /><br />The 9-5 Aero's sport-tuned suspension is on the firm side for the class, especially when you engage Sport in DriveSense. The ride is far more forgiving and feels more substantial than the Infiniti M37, however, while being far from uncomfortable. As such, competitors include everything from the Lexus RX 350 to the Audi Q5, Mercedes-Benz GLK and BMW X3.<br /><br />Trim levels include the V-6 3.0i and 3.0i Premium, both with front- or all-wheel drive. A turbocharged 9-4X Aero tops off the lineup. The center console, center stack and main instrument display are presented within a single form that sweeps up around the driver. For the 9-4X, this is finished with wood or, for Aero interiors, a carbon fiber-effect trim.<br />  <br />Other subtle references to Saab’s aviation heritage include a selectable, aircraft attitude-style speed read-out, green illumination for the needles of the three main dials and traditional Saab ‘joystick’ adjusters for the mesh-style air vents. The ignition – a start/stop button – is, of course, located between the front seats, in true Saab tradition, adjacent to the shift lever.<br /><br />Large, supportive seats include a standard, 8-way electrical adjustment for the driver and an optional electrical adjustment of the foot pedals. Rear passengers enjoy particularly roomy accommodation as rear space is not compromised by the presence of a third row of seats. They also benefit from an independent, three-way manual adjustment of the rake of each 60/40 fold seatback.<br /><br />Ample onboard storage includes double-decked pockets in all doors, a two-tier front glovebox and a deep bin in the center console with 12-volt, USB and AUX connections. Rear passengers have additional storage in the rear face of the center console and the center armrest.<br /><br />Infotainment includes two audio options, a seven-speaker or top-of-the-line, 10-speaker Bose system with 5.1 surround sound. The optional 8-inch touchscreen, hard disk-based navigation system includes a bird’s eye map view and 10 GB storage for ‘jukebox’ music files. Communication on the move is supported by an integrated Bluetooth hands-free phone system, which functions via voice command and steering wheel controls, as well as the infotainment panel. <br /><br />In the rear, passengers can enjoy independent climate control, in addition to the standard dual-zone system, and select their own onboard audio/visual entertainment through a dedicated unit in the back of the center console. Up front, Saab’s new signature grille is flanked by swoopy headlights fitted with adaptive xenon bulbs, with trapezoidal fog-light housings below. The windshield is dramatically raked, and the pillars are blacked-out back to the thick D-pillar, wherein the “blade” of the hockey-stick-esque body line kicks forward, giving the 9-4X an aggressive look. The rear hatch shares the 9-5’s “ice-block” LED-strip, which spans the license-plate recess and connects the taillights. The standard rolling stock measures 18 inches, while Aero models receive 20-inch, nine-spoke wheels that mirror the turbine look of the 9-5’s. Overall, the 9-4X has a sleek look that quite possibly bests all of GM’s mid-size crossovers.<br /><br />The 9-4X sports styling cues similar to Saab's new 9-5 sedan, complete with black window pillars and side mirrors to give the semblance of a wraparound windshield. Up front is the automaker's trademark three-portal grille, and the headlights employ blue-tinted lenses under what Saab calls its "ice-block" theme. Lower portions of the bumpers are clad in gray.<br /><br />Aero versions have mesh grille inserts, fog lights, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights and 20-inch alloy wheels. Xenon headlights are optional on the 3.0i Premium. Both 3.0i and 3.0i Premium trims have 18-inch alloys. Just as with the Cadillac SRX, buyers will have their choice of a naturally aspirated 3.0-liter V-6 producing 265 hp, or the 300-hp, turbocharged 2.8-liter V-6, which will be exclusive to the top-spec Aero model. All-wheel drive is standard on the Aero trim and optional on the otherwise front-wheel-drive 3.0-liter. The Aero also includes Saab’s DriveSense adaptive suspension. Both engines are paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The brand was scheduled to be sold by parent company General Motors, but the deal fell through. GM was ready to completely pull the plug on Saab, but then Dutch supercar maker Spyker made an 11th-hour save. Spyker is now promising a bright future that involves an entirely new car lineup bolstered by an all-new Saab 9-3.<br /><br />Unfortunately, that all-new car is still at least a year away, and the 2011 Saab 9-3 you can buy today is simply the eighth year for a car that was never that impressive to begin with. Among entry-level luxury cars, the 9-3 is the equivalent of an aging Epcot ride in a segment filled with really cool berg-och-dalbanas.<br /><br />The 2011 Saab 9-3 has a 210-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder as its sole engine offering; most of its competitors offer more vigorous performance and/or an engine upgrade of some sort. Its interior is a significant step below its competitors, and it lacks many of the electronic features that have become de rigueur the past few years. There is no iPod interface, for instance, and Bluetooth is bundled with optional OnStar telematics. Despite standard leather upholstery and wood trim, the 9-3 simply doesn't feel like the luxury car its price implies.<br /><br />If there is a bright spot, it is the SportCombi wagon with its unique styling, copious cargo space and, in 9-3X guise, elevated ground clearance. In Aero trim, the SportCombi even handles reasonably well with sharp steering and controlled body motions. There is a dearth of competition nowadays for such a vehicle, which is something the 9-3 sedan and convertible do not enjoy.<br /><br />However, there aren't enough wagon buyers left in this country to help the 9-3 ease Saab up the steep, precipitous hill it's beginning to climb. Until the new 9-3 arrives, Saab loyalists and compact luxury buyers should instead consider the Audi A4 and A5, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Volvo S60 and C70. Non-luxury-branded cars like the Subaru Legacy and Outback and the Volkswagen CC and Eos are also worth a look. The sedan and wagon are sufficiently roomy, but rear legroom is limited in the convertible.<br /><br />Stereo and climate controls are a model of simplicity (a welcome departure from past Saabs), but in a class where topping the competition's high-tech features is commonplace, the 9-3 is practically standing pat. There's no iPod interface, the navigation system is antiquated, there's no real-time traffic and Bluetooth is packaged with OnStar. At least there are a few remaining kooky Saab features, like the console-mounted ignition and the "Night Panel" function that dims most instrument lighting (except most of the speedometer) for nighttime driving.<br /><br />The Saab 9-3 does carry more cargo than many cars in its class, offering 15 cubic feet of trunk space in the sedan and 12.4 cubes in the convertible. The wagon offers 29.7 cubic feet of storage space with the backseat up and an impressive 72.3 cubic feet with the rear seat folded flat. That's more than most compact crossover SUVs.<br /><br />XM Satellite Radio and OnStar are available on all models. An upscale Bose Centerpoint sound system is optional on base sedans and SportCombis and standard with the Aero trim. The 9-3 sedan accommodates up to five people. Saab says the 9-3 convertible is nearly three times as stiff as its soft-top predecessor. The chassis features a supplementary "ring of steel" reinforcement that compensates for the loss of structural rigidity that convertibles ordinarily suffer. The seat belts are integrated into the seat frames, and the rear seats have pop-up roll bars.<br /><br />The convertible comes in base or Aero form, both with the 210-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder found in other 9-3s and front-wheel drive. Leather seats are standard. In base models, a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic is available. Regardless of version the 9-3 is relatively void of chrome and clutter, what's occasionally called jewelry when the basic design isn't so arresting. <br /><br />A wedge side profile is accentuated by the hood seam at the top of the fender, the clamshell hood design better at keeping pine needles and tree droppings out of the engine compartment and shedding snow and ice. Signal repeaters are in the front fenders where they can be seen 180 degrees and are less likely damaged than similar devices mounted in mirror housings. Practical. <br /><br />Since the convertible's top is folding cloth (and available in four colors) there's no bulbous rear end to hide; it looks alright with the top up (sort of a Bentley profile to it) but looks much better with the top down; only the headrests distract from the purity and you want those. At the rear of the convertible there is a small trunk spoiler and different lights and sheet metal than the sedan; it still looks like a 9-3 but aerodynamics dictated the changes to maintain stability and light visibility. <br /><br />The SportCombi has no issues with rear light visibility because the LED lamps run vertically up the pillars next to the hatch; even an all-wheel drive throwing snow or spray around is easily seen, and every 9-3 has a rear fog light for just such conditions. Sleeker roof rails are matte-finish but no less capable, and the roof of the SportCombi is a few inches higher than the sedan so it has lots of hat and cargo room even if it looks a bit utilitarian in profile. <br /><br />Saab claims a coefficient of drag of 0.28 for the base model, a good showing for a compact car. Equally good is the wind management that limits snow buildup on the headlights, moves rain away from the side window/mirror, and keeps taillights clean on dirty roads. AWD is also optional for the sedan.<br /><br />A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the front-drive 2.0T models, and a no-cost option on the Aero, 9-3X and AWD sedans. A five-speed automatic standard is standard on the front-drive Aero models and optional on the 2.0T models. A six-speed automatic is standard on AWD models and the 9-3X.<br /><br />With the manual and front-wheel drive, the 9-3 sedan and SportCombi return an EPA-estimated 21 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined. OnStar emergency telematics is optional on the 2.0T and standard on the Aero.<br /><br />The 9-3 has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedures. Its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to 2011 tests) saw it receiving four out of five stars for frontal and side rear crash protection and five stars for driver side protection. The convertible was not tested.
